Learning Forum: Evolution of Lakota Quillwork

April 1, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Decorative porcupine quillwork is an art form unique to the Native peoples of North America. Although now largely replaced by beadwork, some Lakota artists still continue this tradition today. In this presentation, Conor McMahon will explore the history of quillwork as an artform and the evolution of the art that followed the introduction of glass beads by European colonists. Outstanding artifacts from the collection of the Sioux Indian Museum will illustrate the development of these incredible Lakota arts.
