New England Patriots not expected to trade Jimmy Garoppolo

Despite rumors that the team would explore trading the backup, ESPN’s Adam Schefter says that the team will hang on to its backup.

Patriots starting quarterback Tom Brady will turn 40 next season, and Garoppolo played well in the two games he started this past season during Brady’s suspension. The Eastern Illinois alumnus went 2-0, throwing four touchdown passes and no interceptions during the season’s first two weeks.

Garoppolo suffered a shoulder injury in Week Two and did not play in the two other games that Brady was suspended.

Garoppolo being unavailable could have greater short-term impact on teams other than the Patriots. A number of teams starved for a signal caller will have one less name to consider this offseason. Teams like the Cleveland Browns, Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers and New York Jets could be forced to go after other quarterbacks, such as Mike Glennon or Brian Hoyer.
