New York Mets Sign Tim Tebow to Minor League Contract

Travis Bell / ESPN Images(NEW YORK) — The New York Mets have signed former Heisman trophy winner Tim Tebow to a minor league contract and will send him to the Florida Instructional League.

Tebow worked out for more than 20 teams last week. He has not played baseball since high school in 2005.

ESPN reports that the deal was signed after Mets general manager Sandy Alderson and co-owner Jeff Wilpon agreed it was in the team’s best interests. ESPN had reported “multiple” conversations between Tebow’s representatives and the Atlanta Braves earlier this week.

The 29-year-old showed off a powerful swing at his workout, but reports indicated that his fielding and throwing would need work.

Tebow’s agent, Brodie Van Wagenen also represents Mets pitchers Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom, and Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, among others.
