Justin K. Aller/Getty Images(STATE COLLEGE, Pa.) — A tribute for Joe Paterno was met with controversy at Penn State University on Saturday.
Temple fans and others turned their backs while Lions fans gave a standing ovation after a video honoring the late head coach played for the 50th anniversary of his first game.
Paterno has faced criticism for allegedly knowing about assistant coach Jerry Sandusky’s predatory conduct. Court documents released this summer revealed Paterno may have been aware of the sexual abuse for almost four decades before Sandusky was brought to trial.
A bronze statue of Paterno in front of Beaver Stadium was removed by the school in 2012 after the scandal.
Jay Paterno, the late coach’s son, told ESPN he wanted to see Penn State “get its name back.”
“Joe’s legacy has never been about wins statues, honors, those kinds of things,” he said to ESPN. “It’s been about the young people that came through this program.”
