Robert Laberge/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Ryan Newman and his team have been penalized after his No. 31 Chevrolet failed a post-race pass through the Laser Inspection Station platform at Darlington Raceway last weekend.

Newman was docked 15 points in the standings. In addition, crew chief Luke Lambert was fined 25 thousand dollars and Richard Childress Racing was penalized 15 points in the owner standings.

Newman finished eighth in the Sprint Cup event at Darlington last Sunday, the Bojangles’ Southern 500.

Newman is fighting for a spot in the Chase; he’s currently on the outside looking in. The Chase field will be set following this Saturday’s race at Richmond.

Also on Wednesday, Kyle Larson’s No. 42 Chevrolet team with Chip Ganassi Racing was penalized for a similar violation at Darlington. Larson, who was docked 15 points, will compete in the Chase.
