Sources: San Diego Chargers Planning Move To Los Angeles

Thinkstock/iStock(SAN DIEGO) — The San Diego Chargers plan to announce a move to Los Angeles, NFL sources told ESPN. The move, expected to be announced as early as Thursday, would mark an end to a 55-year-stretch in San Diego.

The move would be a return to the team’s birthplace, where they played their first season in 1960 before moving to San Diego in 1961.

Sources told ESPN that the Chargers notified NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and other league sources that they planned to make the move for the 2017 season.

However, one league source cautioned that nothing is final. As of Wednesday evening, Chargers chairman Dean Spanos had yet to send a formal relocation letter to the NFL, had not informed public officials in either California city of the team’s move, and had not told members of the San Diego organization about his theoretical relocation plans.

If the move goes forward, Los Angeles will have two NFL teams after spending more than twenty years without one. (The Rams moved to Los Angeles from St. Louis in 2016.)
