Stanford Star Skipping Sun Bowl to Prepare for NFL Draft

BananaStock/Thinkstock(STANFORD, Calif.) – Christian McCaffrey, Stanford University’s star running back, announced he will not join his team in the Sun Bowl against North Carolina on Dec. 30.

In a statement from his Twitter account, McCaffrey cited preparing for the NFL Draft as his main reason.

“Very tough decision, but I have decided not to play in the Sun Bowl so I can begin my draft prep immediately. Thx to all my teammates for their 100% support-It means a lot to me. Go Cardinal!”

 

 

McCaffrey made his initial announcement on his plans to forgo his senior year to enter the draft on Dec. 7.

Although Stanford was upset to not have their star player in the game, his coach David Shaw seemed to understand. In a statement, Shaw said. “We understand this was a very difficult decision. For three years Christian has not only been a great player, but a great teammate as well. We wish him great success at the next level, as we continue our preparation for the Sun Bowl”.

Although suffering a midseason injury, McCaffrey finished the season leading all of college football with 2,327 all-purpose yards. He also had 1,603 rushing yards.
