Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim says ACC Tournament doesn't belong in Greensboro

Photo by Allen Kee / ESPN Images(BROOKLYN, N.Y.) — Syracuse may be a relative newcomer to the Atlantic Coast Conference, but that doesn’t mean head basketball coach Jim Boeheim will mince his words when it comes to the site of the league’s conference tournament.

Fresh off his squad’s loss to Miami in the second round of the ACC Tournament, Boeheim praised the event, which was held this year in his homestate, and said it shouldn’t return to one of the former sites.

“There’s no reason to play in Greensboro,” Boeheim said after the game Wednesday. “The only reason they play there is because the league offices are there, it’s always been there and there are like 150 people who like to have meetings.”

“It should not be there,” Boeheim continued.

In recent years, with Syracuse and Pittsburgh joining the league, the ACC has expanded its reach. Last year’s conference tournament was held in Washington, D.C., and this year the games are being hosted in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.

Boeheim and Syracuse used to play in the Big East Tournament in Madison Square Garden, a point he surely hasn’t forgotten. The Big Ten Conference is slated to move its conference tournament to “The World’s Most Famous Arena” next year.

“The media centers, the recruiting centers are Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and New York,” Boeheim opined on Wednesday. “How many good players are in Greensboro? New York made the Big East.”

The city of Greensboro responded to Boeheim’s comments in a tweet.

Boeheim and the Orange have lost in their first game of the ACC Tournament three times in their four years in the conference. The Orange were ineligible for postseason play in the 2014-2015 season.

Boeheim admitted that his impending retirement — announced for after the 2018 season — gives him the freedom to speak his mind.

“I’m saying all of this because I don’t give a [expletive],” Boeheim said. “But this is what’s right. Why do you think the Big Ten is coming to New York City? It’s a good business decision. Everyone says this is all about business. Well, that’s a good business decision.”
