US Soccer Fires Coach Jurgen Klinsmann

Patrick Smith/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Jurgen Klinsmann has been fired as the manager of the United States, the U.S. Soccer Federation announced on Monday.

Klinsmann took charge of the U.S. men’s squad in 2011 and led them into the knockout stage at the 2014 World Cup, but lost his first two World Cup qualifying matches to Mexico and Costa Rica this year.

“Today we made the difficult decision of parting ways with Jurgen Klinsmann, our head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team and Technical Director,” the statement said. “We want to thank Jürgen for his hard work and commitment during these last five years. He took pride in having the responsibility of steering the program, and there were considerable achievements along the way.”

No immediate replacement was announced, but sources tell ESPN that Los Angeles Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena is being negotiated with for the position.
